AlunaGeorge Live Review
XOYO, London - 19/02/13
As 2012’s most blogged band and nominees for both the BBC Sound of 2013 and BRITs Critics Choice Award, expectations for AlunaGeorge’s show tonight were high.
Contrary to popular belief, there are two people in the band, Aluna Francis is the singer and George Reid is the producer – and both are extremely tall.
Their sample-heavy electronic pop music has stormed the UK charts of late, with their feature on fellow dynamic duo Disclosure’s track White Noise recently peaking at No. 2.
With George positioned on stage firmly behind keyboards and electronic equipment, Aluna, dressed in midriff-baring sports luxe and giant shades, was left to writhe about with her signature hypnotic hip dance moves during opener It’s Just A Touch.
The pair didn’t really interact with the crowd - who were mostly backpack and beanie clad under 25-year-olds - which resulted in an initial slight sense of detachment, but a cover of Montell Jordan’s This Is How We Do It and a rendition of viral track You Know You Like It brought the energy up - and by closer Your Drums the night ended on a high.
George is clearly a highly gifted producer, and although Aluna was at times drowned out during the set, her vocals are both intriguing and enticing.
Their lack of communication with the audience doesn’t alter the fact that their music is both fresh and funky, and we’re in no doubt that their debut album Body Music will be one of this summer’s success stories.
