Sugababes’ Amelle Banned For Drink Driving

"Silly" singer says sorry…

Amelle Berrabah has been banned from driving for 14 months and fined £2,000 after being caught drink driving on September 23.

The Sugababessinger appeared in London's Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on October 8 and admitted the charge of driving with excess alcohol.

Amelle’s lawyer said the 26-year-old star was full of remorse. "She realises this is an exceptionally silly thing to have done. She is exceptionally sorry for her actions. She realises it was wrong, she realises she has let herself down, and her family."

The About You Now singer was driving her Mercedes in Camden in the early hours of September 23 when she was arrested. The court heard how neighbours had called the police earlier that morning after Amelle rowed with her boyfriend. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke to the star, who told them she was waiting for a taxi. She then got in a cab and the officers left.

An hour later police arrived back at the flat after neighbours alerted them that the singer was driving away from the address. They recognised the singer’s car on Camden high street and pulled her over.

The 26-year-old’s lawyer argued in court that her fame would make it impossible for the pop singer to use public transport as Amelle “tends to draw huge interest and huge crowds wherever she goes”. But Judge Ian Baker countered that “One can take an awful lot of taxis for the same cost of running such a car for a year”.

The judge told Amelle that if she completes a drink driving rehabilitation programme, she will be able to get back behind the wheel next August, rather than December 2011.
