Angelina Jolie Taking A 'Backseat' On Acting

The Maleficent actress is going to pursue other projects for a while...

Angelina Jolie spoke out today saying that acting is going to take 'a backseat' in her career.

At the UK press conference for her new Disney film Maleficent, the actress revealed she wants to focus on other avenues in the future.

"[Acting is] going to take more of a backseat. I've had a wonderful career and I'm very happy to have had all the opportunities I've had to tell stories and work for as long as I have," she said.

"I'm sure there will be a few more films but I'm happy I'm able to be selective and have fun with characters like this (Maleficent). I would like to focus more on writing and directing, and above all I would like to do more for the UN and my work with the PSVI (Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative)."

Maleficent tells the story of the Sleeping Beautyvillain who curses a child princess, only to realise that they may be the only one who are able to restore peace.

Speaking about the project, Jolie said: "I remember hearing they were going to make a film about Maleficent and I thought, 'God, how could you possibly make a film where the centre character curses a baby?' Linda Woolverton really wanted to back up the story and understand how she became evil."

"The side of fairytales that I don't like are that there's always happy endings, that there's good and evil and things are perfect. When there's a good story for children I think there's a good moral tale - that's what I try to teach my kids and what we tried to do with this film."

You can catch the film in UK cinemas from May 28.
