Fans of Anne Hathaway were worried for the actress when she was pictured drowning earlier this year.
The Rio 2 star was swimming in the sea off the coast of Hawaii in January when she got into trouble in the water. Photographs showed her screaming and going underneath the water.
But during an appearance on the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Anne explained that the pictures looked much more dramatic than reality.
“What happened was I went for a swim in Hawaii,” she recalled. “I’ve been swimming in the ocean my whole life and it’s never been a problem for me, but I think I was maybe a little arrogant and, anyway, I got caught in a rip and I couldn’t get out and I’d been swimming for like ten minutes.”
“I wasn’t being pulled ‘out’ out, I just couldn’t get in,” she clarified. “It would have been really scary if I’d been pulled out but I was just kinda stuck about like, 400, 500 yards out.”
Referring to the photos of her in the water, she explained that she wasn’t screaming for help but shouting ‘Noo’ to her husband, to tell him she wasn’t drowning.
“Im going ‘Nooo’ and I’m like nooo, don’t run out, there’s photographers, you just made this so much more dramatic! And he’s like ‘My wife is dying’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not dying, I just don’t know how to communicate this to you!’”
She also posed for a side-by-side with the photo of her in trouble, to prove she was shouting ‘Nooo’.
The star added that a picture of her husband, Adam Shulman, kissing her injured foot after she got out of the water also went viral. “We knew we were having our photograph taken and we also knew that if the photograph wasn’t being taken he would’ve given my foot a kiss,” she said.
“So we had this moment and I watched my husband make a decision about what type of man he was and he’s like I don’t care, mwah, and it was so sweet!”
