Michael Phelps has revealed an unlikely inspiration behind his record-breaking eight Olympic gold medals - Lil Wayne.

Phelps, whose unbelievable achievements this month have seen him surpass Olympic legends including Carl Lewis and Mark Spitz in the gold medal stakes, has revealed that it was the champion-themed music of Lil Wayne that fired him up prior to each race.

Speaking in an interview with The Today Show, the flipper-footed gold-hogger named Waynes track Im Me as his song of choice for getting him in the win zone.

Lyrics to Im Me include such inspirational nuggets as: Ain't nobody f***in' wit me, man, and you already know that... F**k up my dreams; somebody gon' die tonight!"

Movingly, the track continues: I'm me, bitch! I'm me. So who you? You're not me. You're not me. And I know that aint fair, but I don't care."
