Veteran actor James Spader has been cast as titular villain Ultron in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Spader is best known for playing Alan Shore in the hit TV series Boston Legal, a role which nabbed him three Emmy Awards.

The 53-year-old also recently appeared in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and will return to TV screens later this year in the new NBC series The Blacklist.

Avengers director Joss Whedon recently [uuid=332db015-6836-4e75-abe2-386eb6821f41]gave some insight into how he plans to depict[/uuid] the iconic Marvel baddie, telling Entertainment Weekly: "He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy.

"He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone who's a witch."

Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit cinemas in May 2015.
