Heath Ledger has been honoured with the best actor award for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight .
The Australian actor who died from an accidental overdose of painkillers and other medicines earlier this year was awarded with the posthumous prize at the Australia Film Institute Awards.
His sister Kate spoke of the familys grief for the 28-year-old as she picked up the award with Michelle Williams, on behalf of the stars 3 year old daughter Matilda.
She said: "It's been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member.
"We are so proud of him and humbly accept this award on behalf of his beautiful daughter, who we will cherish forever."
Heaths mother Sally also spoke of their pride:
"Heath was never one to accept mediocrity, he put his heart and soul into achieving what he believed was required and followed his passions with great enthusiasm and an insatiable curiosity."
His portrayal of the Joker has sparked speculation that he could also win a rare posthumous Oscar
