7 Tips And Products For Anyone Prone To Ingrown Hairs

Because there is nothing more annoying...

We’ve all experienced those uncomfortablered bumpsaround thebikini lines and underarms that seems to pop up post-waxjust to ruin your day. HELLO ingrowns, which if you didn't know, are basically just hairs that have curled back on themselvesinstead of growing upwards, and are trapped beneath the surface.

This obvs gets your skin majorly miffed and the hair follicle becomes inflamed and sometimes infected. So to get rid of these nasty suckers, and avoid making them worse by picking your skin, then follow these super easy tips...

1. Try some glycolic acid...

The acid can chip away at dead skin and sebum that cause a barrier between the hairs and the outside world. Try NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Body Cream (£8, asos.com) which, as well as glycolic, contains salicylic acid to dissolve excess oil and lactic acid to smooth your skin.

2. Use a dry body brush...

Not only does it stave off cellulite and smooth your skin but the brush also improves clogged pores and stop ingrowns from sprouting. Try Mio Skincare’s The Mio Body Brush (£14.50, mioskincare.co.uk) for some super smooth results.

3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate...

Every good bikini waxer worth their salt will tell you that exfoliating in the shower is the best way to avoid ingrown hairs. Leave it until last so that the warm water softens the skin and allows the follicles to loosen. Do this 2-3 times a week for best results.

4. Invest in a good shower gel...

Skin guru Mario Badescu’s AHA Botanical Body Soap (£8, beautybay.com) tackles body acne and ingrown like a total boss. It might look a bit sterile but actually smells like a dream and keeps your skin super soft. Any shower gels with chemical exfoliating AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are bound to do the trick.

5. Use a needle

If one of those sneaky snakes had popped up and seems to be sticking around, then the NHS recommends "using a sterile needle or tweezers to gently tease it out. However, don't dig for the hair if it lies deep below the skin's surface."

6. Stay away from shaving...

If you can, avoid the razor as it’s the number one cause of ingrowns. Waxing pulls the entire hair out of the skin while laser hair removal damages your follicles at the root, stopping them hairs from even growing. Shaving, on the other hand, chops the hair at skin level making it way easier to turn into an ingrown. If you insist on shaving at least shave the way the hair grows instead of against the grain. This cuts the hair so it is naturally better shaped to grow normally without causing ingrowns.

7. Use a post hair removal treatment...

After getting rid of those pesky hairs use an after-shave/wax treatment like Bliss' Ingrown Eliminating Pads, (£28, lookfantastic.com). The pads are soaked in AHAs and contain soothing ingredients like Witch Hazel and Lavender Oil.
