13 Easy But Life Changing Beauty Resolutions To Keep In The New Year
Resolutions you might actually keep.
Ahh January - the month of broken promises. Exercise bikes turned into artistic clothes drapers, healthy cook books transformed into handy hot chocolate coasters, and the vow to be a social butterfly somehow becoming you watching videos at 3am of Japanese cats starring in fashion shows. Don’t fight it, it’s your destiny.
The odds of us sticking to ANY actual New Years resolutions are pretty much slim to none - but when it comes to making some long-lasting changes to our beauty routine, that might be something we can just about get on board with.
Don’t do better, don’t be better, don’t change yourself as a person. Just look marginally better (or even just a bit cleaner) with these genuinely easy but life changing beauty resolutions, which you can actually keep this New Year.
1. Change your razor head regularly
If you’re guilty of hacking at your hairy bits with a razor that looks like long-buried pirate treasure, stop what you’re doing this instant. Using the same blade for too long can leave it totally dull, damaging your skin and brewing a shedload of bacteria that will only lead to pesky ingrown hairs and red bumps.
Count around 10 uses as a rough guide before you need to change razor (don’t be lazy), and you’ll discover all new realms of silky smoothness for 2017.
2. Ditch the face wipes and cleanse your skin properly
Yes it’s a bit of an effort when you just want to get into bed and eat toast, but it’s so important to take off your makeup, and then give your skin a proper cleanse. Not only are you removing your slap (micellar waters are great for this part), but think of all the pollution that’s hit your lovely face during the day too.
And yep, by ‘cleanse’ we mean CLEANSE - ideally twice at night with a nourishing oil or balm - once to remove the grime, and once to have an effect on the skin. And strictly no harsh face wipes allowed. Bin ‘em right now.
3. Invest in the essentials for a real routine
Lazy guys and girls will give the world’s most epic eye roll at the thought of committing to a nightly skincare routine, but c’mon, we’re not talking an extensive 10-step Korean facial massage. Just invest in the basics - a cleanser, a toner, a serum and a moisturiser.
Once you get the hang of adding these into your bedtime routine (it will take you five minutes, max), pick one or two nights a week to exfoliate, and another that you’ll be fancy with a face mask. It’ll become as standard as brushing your teeth.
4. Floss your teeth (it’s v simple)
Oh gahd we try SO HARD TO DO THIS and always forget. But 2017 is gonna be the year that we all truly commit to flossing, okay? Let’s do it together, teamwork makes a dream work. It’s a miracle worker for ditching the plaque, will massively lessen your chance of gum disease, and a beautiful smile is the most foolproof way of looking hot af with minimal effort.
5. Reach for the heat protectant spray
Although we could suggest that you break up with your blow dryer and see less of your straighteners, no one’s ready for change in that kind of life-long relationship. Overusing your heat tools is obvs the worst thing to do when it comes to dryness and breakage, but as some sort of compromise, it’s worth treating yourself to products that can lessen the effect.
Get yourself a great heat protectant spray (and remember to use it, ffs), or a hair styling primer to extend your style a couple of extra days.
6. Stop picking your spots, or else
Spot. On Your Face. Pick It. Piiiick Ittttt. That’s your brain telling you exactly what not to do, and the temptation is oh so real. But the more you pick and fiddle with a blemish, the more you’re going to spread bacteria, extend the healing process, and cause even more break outs.
Instead, invest in a targeting spot treatment product to dab on at bed time. By the morning, the acids and other magical ingredients will have worked their magic, and you’ll be wondering what you were so bothered about.
7. Wash your makeup brushes (please, they’re gross)
Shove your makeup brushes under a microscope and we’d bet all of our snacks that there’d be some pretty gross stuff hiding amongst the clogged-up bristles. When was the last time you gave them a good, deep clean? Or even a quick spot clean, for that matter. Unwashed brushes are packed with dirt and grime that won’t do your complexion any favours.
Make a vow to get them spotless at least once a week and you’ll thank yourself - mainly when you go to do a smokey eye and don’t immediately mix all your shades with what was already on the brush, yaaas.
8. Get your brows booked in
Admit it, how many times have you decided to get your arches on fleek, only to find yourself freaking out in front of the mirror 20 minutes later because you’ve pulled out the wrong hairs and basically left yourself EYEBROW BALD.
They’re arguably the most important part of the face, so if you’re gonna get just one step of your beauty routine sorted in 2017, make it your eyebrows. Even if you just visit the professionals once, let them help you get a good shape, thickness and tint nailed down, and your whole makeup look will look so much more put together.
9. Start using SPF in your skincare
Whether you’re a sun-drenched beach bum who lives in a bikini, or currently reading this feature in a rainy grey bus stop in Croydon, you need to be using SPF. Fact. Your skin is subjected to sun damage even when it’s cloudy, and UV rays are one of the main culprits for premature ageing (as well as skin cancer).
You should really be wearing at least factor 15 every single day, and you can slip this seamlessly into your normal makeup routine by adding it on as the last product in the morning before your makeup. Some foundations even contain the stuff, so it really is easy peasy.
10. Strive for seven hours of good sleep
Yes we know you’ve got seven episodes of Geordie Shore to catch up on before the sun rises, but it ain’t called Beauty Sleep for nothing. A good night’s sleep gives your skin the chance to restore and repair, and rest is the most important thing that your body needs to detox after Christmas.
NO, sitting on your phone in bed does not count. Scrolling late at night is something we’re all guilty of, but the screen luminosity can strain your eyes and leave you squinting, and blue light is thought to be massively unhelpful to achieving a peaceful, undisturbed snooze.
11. Stop hoarding products you never use
A particularly relevant resolution for anyone who’s easily swayed by bloggers and YouTubers, it’s time to face the cold, hard truth. You really don’t need 18 foundations, 76 moisturisers and a pinky-nude lipstick for every day of the year - especially when some of them were bought back in 2009. Sigh.
Using makeup past its lifespan can be hella bacteria-packed and the products themselves won’t be performing properly anymore, anyway. Cut the clutter, get organised and you’ll feel like a whole new human.
12. Drink more water
Even if you’re on a tight budget post-Xmas, you can stick to this one and see some awesome results. Staying hydrated is the easiest and cheapest way to get the glow a la the Hadid sisters. Aim to drink around 2L a day (but this can include the water within your foods, FYI), and avoid all of those sugary, caffeinated drinks which can unsettle your sleep and leave your skin feeling thirsty.
13. Embrace your face
The most important beauty resolution of all, right here. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are WONDERFUL. You are AMAZING. Your face is REALLY GOOD. Practice some serious self love in 2017, and try your best to come to the conclusion that your flaws do not define you. You’re doing great in all aspects and this year will be even better, so just relax and appreciate the fact that you are really quite great. Yay.
