Everything You Need To Know About Getting Veneers

We're beyond curious about the popular procedure.

Getting veneers is a huge decision to make, not least because of the cost but also because it's a somewhat lengthy process from start to finish. So we put all of our burning questions to celebrity dentist Dr Richard Marques, who knows a thing or two when it comes to creating the perfect smile.

From exactly what getting veneers involves to how much upkeep is needed, you'll be fully up to speed by the time you reach the end of this.

Can anyone get veneers?

Anyone can benefit from veneers. Whether they want to correct crooked teeth, permanently whiten or change the overall look of their smile, veneers are certainly an option for everyone.

How much of each tooth will you shave away?

Probably a lot les than you think! We would usually shave each tooth back around 0.5mm to make room for the veneers, but this will of course vary from case to case.

How much does the process of getting veneers hurt?

Typically we would anesthetise the area to avoid discomfort during the actual procedure, so it shouldn’t be painful at all. Post-procedure, some people experience mild discomfort as the veneers adjust, but this will quickly fade and ultimately feel completely natural.

How long do I have to wear temporary ones for?

Following an initial consultation, temporary crowns are fitted and usually worn for one to two weeks whilst you wait for your final crowns to be made. This is also a great chance for you to get used to how your new smile will look, and make any necessary changes.

How do I choose the right dentist?

I would recommend consulting with your dentist and visiting their clinic to make sure you’re completely comfortable going forward. They should make you feel at ease and answer all any questions or concerns you may have. Make sure they’re really listening to what you want and advising the best possible treatment specific to you. It’s also important to check their accreditations and do some research into previous customer’s experiences.

Once you have them, what’s the maintenance like?

A follow-up appointment is required one week after the veneers are fitted to check everything is ok. Following this, it’s important to look after them with a regular dental hygiene routine. Brush, floss and rinse twice a day, and be sure to attend check-ups at the dentist every six months.
