When it comes to weird and wonderful beauty trends, Instagram is way up there with its inspo.

Here's the biggest, best and sometimes most weird makeup and hair styling trends the internet obsessed over on Insta this year...

1. Crystal lips

Not massively practical unless you are a mermaid princes, but justSO. PRETTY.

2. Secret rainbow hair

A sneaky way to live your rainbow hair dreams without breaking any dresscodes at school or work. All you do to achieve is dye the underlying layer of hair so that you can easily cover up the colour with the top layers.

3. 100 layers challenge

This challenge took over the entire internet with variations ranging from 100 layers of highlighterto 100 layers of Kylie Jenner Lip Kits. Why? Because we're all fascinated with the extreme side of beauty and because it was lol to watch too.

4. Shoulder strobing

For those days when strong cheekbones just aren't enough.

5. Dyeing your hair with Nutella

Sounds nuts (see what we did there?) and we have to say we're not totally convinced this would work, but that wasn't stopping one hair stylist trying it out.

6. Holochrome nails

It's no surprise the entire internet became obsessed with these mesmerising nails in 2016. JUST LOOK HOW SHINY THEY ARE.

7. Mermaid crowns

Because it's the ultimate dream for anyone who wishes they were a sea queen.

8. Glitter roots

Again, Insta just can't resist a shiny style and glitter roots were the perfect style to look jazzy AND hide your greasy roots at all the major summer music festivals.

9. Scorpion nails

A thoroughly bonkers (not to mention controversial) trend from Mexico which involved people putting a mini scorpion inside their nail art.

10. Bun dropping

Not a hair style per se, but everyone still got a little bit crazy over these slo-mo vids of gals letting their buns drop and swish from side to side. Gloriously satisfying.

11. Glow in the dark hair

This one is SOgood that we even did a tutorial in how to DIY the look yourself...

12. Rainbow brows

Rainbow dyeing doesn't just have to be one for your hair; now it's your brows' turn.

13. Hair rings

Because sometimes jewellery for your bod just isn't enough.

14. Glittery underbrows

Reckon people aren't paying enough attention to your seriously on fleek brows? Then line them with glitter so no one can miss them, duh.

15. Galaxy freckles

The most fantastical way to glitz up your freckles (or just actually get some if you don't naturally have 'em).

16. Neck contouring

Has contouring finally gone too far? Probably, but for some reason that hasn't stopped a large portion of the internet watching vids on how to make the back of their necks look slim.
