5 Ways To Shrink A Spot Overnight
Woken up with the mother of all spots on your face? Check out a few genius ways to shrink that bad boy overnight, over at MTV.co.uk.
Picture the scene. Tomorrow is picture day and you’ve got to look your best, followed by a new job interview that’s all about confidence. Then its your big birthday night out (oh hi, millions of selfies) and then you’ve got that wedding the day after, guaranteed to fill up a few family photo albums that you'll look at for years to come. Hooray, sounds FUN.
But wait… err, what’s that on your face? Oh no biggie - it's just a bright red, swollen, miniature volcano emerging from the depths of your skin, bursting onto the surface to wave hello and ruin your life for the forseeable future.
Not that you don’t still look drop dead gorge, but we all know there’s nothing worse than a giant zit making an unwelcome appearance when you least expect it. Rather than grabbing the closest paper bag to wear over your head, check out these give golden tips and tricks to shrink that bad boy as much as possible overnight.
1. Give your face some serious TLC.
Of course, that shiny little sucker is stealing all of your attention right now, but the first step in minimising the appearance of a spot is to give your whole face some love and cleansing care, before you start the more specific process of shrinking the spot down.
It's super important to make sure that you're keeping your skin clean and getting into the habit of a proper skincare routine every day, so start by using a nourishing balm or oil cleanser to remove any makeup, and strip away dirt from the surface. Wipe it all away with a flannel for some bonus exfoliation, too. Now that you're glowing and gorgeous, you can turn your focus back to that dayumn spot.
2. If you really need to pop it…*sigh*
We’ve all been there, and for some reason we NEVER LEARN. When it’s sitting on your face like a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae, it’s all too tempting to shove your finger nails either side and pop that spot into oblivion.
And yep - you end up with an even bigger, redder, probably-bleeding-a-bit mess than you started with.
Rather than mercilessly squeezing a zit, take a hot shower to open your pores and gently softly carefully press down little bt little on the skin surrounding the spot, using either clean cotton buds or clean fingers. If it’s ready, it will come up and out in that satisfying kinda way. If not, do yourself a favour and leave it. Keep sharp nails and heavy pressure well away, and absolutely do not pick at it afterwards, capeesh?
3. Drop some acid in the mix.
Acid toner is your BFF if you struggle with pesky pimples, and you should use it in your faily skincare routine anyway - but when it comes to shrinking a spot overnight, it's particularly handy.
Cotton wool soaked with something like Pixi Glow Tonic, or handy pre-soaked pads like the First Aid Facial Radiance Pads, are perfect for following up on the squeezing sesh. Hold the acid on the spot with some hard pressure.
Yep, it’ll sting like an absolute beeyatch and you’ll feel like Kevin in Home Alone when he screams at the mirror, but the acid will be help to kill off any bacteria once you've got rid of the good stuff, as well as speeding up the healing process and preparing your skin for the next step in all of this.
4. Take care to calm the surrounding skin.
You’ve probably been told a million and one times that spots need to be dried out in order to disappear, and yep, that’s kind of true, but the same definitely can’t be said for the surrounding skin. Drying out the skin itself will only lead to more inflammation, dehydration, a load more bacteria, and scarring.
On the flipside, skin that's nourished and hydrated skin will be much less likely to scar, and will feel much calmer and soothed when you wake up tomorrow.
After all that careful poking and prodding, treat your skin to a super juicy, luxurious facial oil like Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil - best applied with some super fancy massaging, too.
Not only will this leave your skin feeling spoilt rotten and baby soft, but it can also help bring the spot to a head the next morning for clean popping, or (fingers crossed) calm it down completely overnight.
5. Invest in a good spot treatment.
It kinda goes without saying that, if you mean business about banishing the blemish, you need to treat yourself to some decent, topical skincare - particularly a targeting spot treatment.
Something like Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion (Kylie Jenner’s fave) will pack a serious acne-fighting punch, with ingredients like salicylic acid and sulphur that dry up your spots to significantly shrink them. Aesop’s Control Gel is also a good'un, packed with vitamin C, salicylic acid and an aloe base to calm and soothe.
You only need a teeny tiny amount of products like this on the end of a cotton bud, so they'll last for ages in your skincare stash. Carefully dab that red traffic light on your face with the formula, and you’ll definitely be able to see noticeable results in the morning that won't be such a challenge for your concealer.
Aaaand breathe, crisis averted.
