Where's Becky Hill Been? Sorting Out Her Debut Album Which Is "Pretty Much There" Yay!
We grill the 'Gecko (Overdrive)' chart-topper about her album, flat tyres and hitting the studio with her mate MNEK...
Since featuring on our Brand New For 2015 list, releasing her 'Losing' EP and topping the UK chart with Oliver Heldens last year, we couldn't get enough of Becky Hill. "What happened to her this year?" you might cry... Fear not, she's been busy.
Back in our lives on Watermät & Tai's 'All My Love', we caught five mins with Becky to talk her latest collab, her love for MNEK and just what the hell is going on with her debut album...
You’re back! Where have you been? We’ve missed you…
"I've been writing lots! Went for my first writing trip to the states in February and just came back from my first writing camp in Copenhagen. I'm loving being a writer at the moment, it's nice to be able to change between performer and writer every so often."
You’re hitting the dance vibes again on ‘All My Love’ – what made you jump back onto the club tracks and in particular this one?
"I actually didn't want to write to the instrumental! I thought it was too good to put a topline over it but me Mark Ralph and Karen Poole gave it a go one morning and it turned out a lot better than I expected! Watermät and Polydor loved it so it seemed stupid not to collaborate on 'All My Love'. Still yet to meet Watermät and Tai though, looking forward to that!"
Any funny stories from the video shoot?
"Haha well, midway through my hair and make up for the second half of the filming, torrential rain and thunders storms came and ruined the second half of the shoot. We were driving round in the rain desperately trying to find a spot to shoot. We ended up popping two car tires on a slippery curb lol."
What’s happening with the album Becky? Tellll usssss…
"So I pretty much have the album ready and waiting to be polished up and released. I still think there's one more song to be written, which is always exciting 'cause you never know when you're gonna write the song you're looking for and I'm super excited about going back to the states to write again. Hopefully I'll have a fully completed album and singles ready and waiting to go for the beginning of 2016."
Have you been working on it with your pal MNEK? Please say yes.
"Uzo's written half my album with me! He's the greatest guy I know. Along with another friend of mine Shift K3y, we wrote possibly my favourite song on the album called 'Warm'. I did another sick song with a guy called Noah Breakfast (from Chiddy Bang back in the day) and Emily Warren who's an amazing young songwriter - can't wait to put that out there!"
On the subject, how amazing is MNEK and Zara Larsson’s new tune?!
"I looooove it!!! You should have seen us the other night, we were all in a taxi back to Uzo's studio and it came on the radio and literally the whole cab was going mad, hands in the air singing the lyrics really loud and everything haha!"
Is Zara going to be a bit hit outside of her native Sweden do you think?
"It wouldn't surprise me! She's a young, pretty girl with a great voice (and the Swedish thing is always a bonus, they're musical geniuses out there I've heard!)"
What three tunes have you not been able to stop listening to lately?
"I can't stop listening to 'Second I'm Rich' which is this unreleased tune by an American boy called Brayton Bowman. He wrote it with Uzo and Tre Jean Marie and he's sick!! His voice is amazing and he's such a great guy we need to get him to the UK ASAP!
"I also love Jess Glynne's album track 'Why Me' - proper throwback tune; a bit different from what she usually releases.
"Aaaand I also can't stop playing a release called 'No Harm Done' produced by Noah Breakfast which everyone should be aware of too, he's a sick producer."
Everyone will soon be choosing their artists who they think will make it big next year. Who are you backing for great things in 2016?
"Nao should really be at the top of your list I think she's amazing, her vibe is interesting, left field songs and her voice is super cute and quirky too. Little Simz is also one of my favourite bitches killing it right now. I'm in awe of her spirit and ambition. I really think she's gonna be bigger than a lot of rappers out right now. My dear friend Leo is also starting to put his tunes out and his all year round beachy vibes are exactly what you need with the British weather."
Becky will be performing live at We Are WHSE on 24th October alongside Oliver Heldens, Danny Howard, Philip George, Zeds Dead and Zonderling. For more information and tickets, click here.
