Bella Hadid Speaks Out About Her 'Very Public' Breakup With The Weeknd For The First Time
"Love hurts, but you have to pull through"
But while both parties have kept pretty quiet about their split, Bella now has addressed just how difficult it was in a new interview with Teen Vogue.
While splitting with The Weeknd - real name Abel Tesfaye - was her first break up with a boy, it wasn't her first break up per se and her first taste of heartbreak apparently came when she sold her horse, Lego, after a decision to quit horse riding professionally.
“I rotated between a few horses that could jump higher or whatever. But Lego was my main, my ride or die,” Bella tells the mag.
“When I had to sell him, it was like a breakup! I was really traumatised."
“You can ask any equestrian: You develop a crazy, emotional connection with this animal," she adds. "When you’re riding a horse, they have full control over you, and they can literally kill you in a second, so you build a trust with them.”
But then came her split from Abel and Bella says it was just as, if not more, upsetting to deal with, thanks mainly to the fact they went through it in the public eye.
“It was my first breakup - or second, next to the horse - and so public. As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it’s always in your heart, and you always feel it very heavily,” she shares. “It’ll be hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to pull through.”
So are there any hard feelings?
“I’ll always respect him, and I’ll always love him," she concludes. "Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you’ve fought so hard to build.”
