Hang On - Did Beyoncé & Adele Actually Outsell Drake In 2016?

What's going on here?

Earlier this year, we reported that Drake was Planet Earth’s best-selling artist in 2016, according to an IFPI report.

But, if you consider a new report from the same organisation, which centres solely on albums, both Beyoncé and Adele 'actually outsold' Drake.

Today, IFPI announced that Beyoncé’s 'Lemonade' (2.5 million sales) and Adele’s '25' (2.4 million) both outsold Drake's 'Views'– if you only take CDs, vinyl and downloads into consideration.'Views', using these measurements, sold 2.3 million.

In the original report, which used streaming as a measurement, Drake was first, Adele was fourth (behind David Bowie and Coldplay), and Beyoncé was seventh.

Wait, what the hell is IFPI?

IFPI describes itself as an organisation that promotes the interests of the international recording industry worldwide.

Soooo, who actually sold the most in 2016?

Well, first of all, the initial report was about 2016’s best-selling artist, not album, so there is a difference.

Furthermore, it depends which report you want to go by - the one that axed streaming, or the one that embraced it.

If you want our opinion, we’d go with the report we shared back in February, which counted streaming.

After all, how could streaming - which now impacts the charts, has 110 million paying streaming subscribers (with'plenty' of free users out there) and dominates the UK and the US – not be seen as a legitimate method of gauging who is 'really' the world’s most popular musician? As more and more people use streaming services to listen to music, surely a report that discounts streaming is, well, a little silly?

Either way, it’s interesting to see just how much streaming services are helping Drake out/lining his pockets with 'gold'.
