Biffy Clyro Reveal All About New Record 'Ellipsis' & Why Bands Should Be Their Own Biggest Fans

We caught up with the band at Radio 1's Big Weekend…

Before their first festival performance of the summer we caught up with rock legends Biffy Clyro to chat about their forthcoming record, 'Ellipsis' and their ultimate festival memories.

With Radio One's Big Weekend being their first live performance in a very long time, frontman Simon Neil told us of the band's pent up energy and why they couldn't wait to get on the stage.

When asked what fans could expect from their live performance (which was phenomenal FYI), Simon said: "Probably more adrenaline than normal because we haven’t played a show in ages and also we’ve got keep it very curt, it’s only 45 minutes so it’s gonna be tough. We just can’t wait to play the new songs and see the fans again because we’ve been cooped up for a long time. It feels as though we’ve been let out to play."

Radio 1's Big Weekend is known for drawing in some of the biggest names in the industry, however, due to such a tight schedule the band's set is only 45 minutes long. For a group with seven studio albums (and counting), not to mention the various other EPs they've released, their set must have taking some careful consideration.

Simon joked that they were already in danger of running over before the set had even begun, saying: "Ten minutes in we’ll already be 45 minutes over!" After watching the band absolutely slay their headline slot on the In New Music We Trust stage, we can confirm that they absolutely nailed it and left fans wanting more.

The Scottish three-piece have been rehearsing their new songs for a while now, when asked how they were going the band opened up about the difficulties of bringing a record to life on stage. Simon said: "The first week was tough, you’re in such a headspace making a record and then you try and bring it to life. It took us a few days to even adapt and it was like I'd forgotten how to sing!"

Biffy Clyro have literally played every festival going, so when asked to choose one of their highlights it was obviously a tough decision. They did however tell an amazing anecdote about a festival in France. Simon told us: "We played a festival in the south of France a few years ago, the stage was on the beach and as we finished we just ran and jumped straight into the lake, it was one of the most liberating moments. We all came up from the water, the crowd were looking at us and we were just bobbing around going 'coooool'." Now THAT is something we wished we'd seen!

For a band that have been around as long as Biffy have, we asked them what advice they would give to up and coming bands. Here are their words of wisdom: "Make sure your friends with people in the band" Simon began. "If you value your ambition more than your relationships in the band then relationships will deteriorate." Sounds words of wisdom from the band's frontman.

As well as making sure you actually get on with the people in your band, the guys also said that you should be the biggest fans of your own music. Simon began: "Make sure you LOVE what you do, it's as simple as that. It's hard enough to convince someone else to like your music if you don't love it.

He added: "We were always the biggest fans of our band and probably still are! Be a fan of your band and just don't plan anything. You can't career plan being in music, you've just gotta try and get better, see as many shows, listen to records and go and see bands that you don't necessarily like as well because you'll be surprised what you can pick up, just get out and do it!"
