MTV Unplugged: Biffy Clyro Take Us Into The Woods For Incredible Stripped Back Set

The Scottish rockers closed the first night of MTV Music Week with a night we won't forget in a long while...

If you went down to the woods last night you might have stumbled upon Biffy Clyro’s incredible MTV Unplugged show.

Rounding off the first night of MTV Music Week in the lead up to the EMAs this weekend, the Scottish rockers played an exclusive live acoustic set at London’s iconic Roundhouse and it was nothing short of phenomenal.

Cleary taking inspiration from Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged setting (the guys used to practice that show in their garage back in the day), the band were set in the centre of the round underneath a full-on tree and surrounded by woodland foliage and ethereal lighting, as if we’d just wandered into a magical woodland clearing.

Any fan who’s seen The Biff live will know they like to bare some skin, but last night the only thing stripped was their catalogue-spanning set list.

Predominantly choosing tracks from the Puzzle era onward, we were treated to exclusive versions of ‘Many Of Horror’, ‘The Captain’, ‘Mountains’, ‘Medicine’ and many more. And props to the person who snuck in a bubble machine for ‘Bubbles’!

In true Unplugged tradition though, there was of course a cover. The band chose to pay homage to the Beach Boys classic ‘God Only Knows’, and as the first words were sung, there were literal gasps of glee around the room as Simon began.

Speaking with Jack Saunders before the show Simon said of the cover: “One morning I woke up and thought I need to try and cover ‘God Only Knows’. I’ve got the lyrics tattooed on my chest and it was the first dance at my wedding and we’ve never covered it or attempted to and it felt like tonight was just that special moment and hopefully it’ll be a highlight of the evening…one of many!”

Spine-tingling doesn’t even begin to describe the mood felt last night. We’d like to thank Biffy Clyro for treating us, and their fans, to such an amazing night and we can’t wait to share the show with you all on MTV in the New Year.
