Review: Katy B, Ella Eyre And George Ezra Bring The MTV Brand New House Down

The trio had us dancing with the lights on...

London was all shook up last night thanks to our MTV Brand New gig hosted by Emporio Armani Diamonds.

Two of the UK’s biggest up and coming acts – George Ezra and Ella Eyre - took to the stage for an epic performance with Katy B storming it as the headliner.

Feeling: A larger-than-life event in an intimate venue. With the artists’ names projected onto the side of the building in a kaleidoscope of colour, the crowd were pumped before even setting foot inside Islington Assembly Hall.

The interior – a cross between Brixton Academy and an old-school music hall – was perfect to introduce the world to two of MTV’s hottest new acts as well as offer a rare opportunity to get up and close with the legendary Katy B.

George Ezra got the mood going with a laid back, one-man show before Ella Eyre exploded on to stage in a riot of mega vocals and mega hair. And finally, Katy B and her backing dancers got the crowd jumping in a brilliant finale.

The Look: George kept it low-key in a blue plaid shirt and jeans, letting his booming vocals do the talking while Ella looked sexy and chic in a pair of Olivia Newton John-worthy tight black leggings paired with a bralet, white blazer, chains (we know she loves ‘em!) and big, big hair.

Katy, meanwhile, looked effortlessly cool in a black and white jumpsuit.

Tunes: Despite not even having a debut album out yet, both Ella and George have enough hits in their arsenal to get the crowd going.

As well as a few new tracks, George pulled out Cassy O’, which he released last week as a free download, and sent shivers down our spine with a soulful rendition of his single Can You Hear The Rain, which has already been featured on Made In Chelsea.

Ella’s incredible energy and stage presence got the crowd swaying to some of her newer songs before busting out her number 1 hit with Rudimental, Waiting All Night, and current single Deeper, which sent everyone into a frenzy.

Katy, headlining, made sure to include party anthems 5am and Lights On before previewing some tracks from her new album, Little Red, which is out later this year.

Banter: Between Ella Eyre teaching us the words to her songs and George Ezra joking that catching sight of himself on screen was distracting, by the end of the night we felt like we’d really gotten to know our MTV Brand New nominees

Celeb Spots: We caught MTV Brand New Unsigned winner Marie Naffah dancing along in the crowd!

Sweat Factor: George Ezra’s mellow vibe kept everyone cool before Ella Eyre and her relentless energy swept everyone into a frenzy. Which meant by the time Katy B was done pounding the stage, the crowd was as sweaty as the weather was damp outside. Nice.

Summary: The perfect introduction to two acts set to rock our world in the coming year and an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with Katy B.

That’s what we call a great night.

MTV Rating:5 Stars
