Bad Sounds Open Up About Being Brothers in a Band and Trying to Out-Do Themselves
EXCLUSIVE! Bad Sounds gives us the 411 on who they are in our MTV Brand New For 2018 spotlight interview...
We're putting our MTV Brand New For 2018 spotlight on Bad Sounds today. The genre-defying five-piece have been creating a buzz and developing a fanbase ever since their debut. Annie Mac even called their single 'Avalanche' the "sound of the future".
In an exclusive interview, Callum and Ewan, who front the band, spoke to us about their craft and Brand New.
Watch our Brand New For 2018 spotlight with Bad Sounds here:
Considering their indie beginnings, Ewan revealed that they feel a little out of place but very grateful to be considered for the title. "We feel like the weird little sibling that's been brought along to the cool event but yeah we're super happy. No complaints."
Discussing what it's like to work together, Ewan said: "Me and Callum are brothers. He moved away and learnt about recording and songwriting and I just got more into sample based stuff. It's almost like we kind of fill two halves of a good songwriter."
Callum then joked half seriously: "We complete one another is what he's trying to say."
As cheesy as it may sound though, it's clear that they do. Their sounds mesh so well.
The boys also spoke about the inspiration behind their songs. "We just write about our friends and literally all of our songs start from a genuine line a friend has said to us." This no doubt contributes to their appeal. Their songs are specific and relatable.
Callum then quipped that his sisters are sad that they haven't made any songs with them in mind yet. "They are disappointed that we haven't wrote a song about them." To be honest, if Callum and Ewan were our brothers, we'd be disappointed as well.
As for their craft, Ewan told us: "I think the way we approach writing is really hip-hop." He then added: "When we find something we like we just try and incorporate it in and if it works, it works, and if it doesn't we burn the house down and move away."
"It always gets boring for us if we try and do something that we've already done before."
Their songs attest that they don't repeat themselves. Each exists in its own universe.
We cannot wait to hear more from them and see what Bad Sounds will do this year.
