While the actor does say that a much smaller percentage of the population are actual bullies, he draws attention to the huge number of people that have witnessed it happen and chose to do nothing.
"We've all done we've all done nothing when we see people we know get mistreated. In reality, only 8% of the population are actual bullies while 80% of us are bystanders,” revealed the star.
Using statistics from StopBullying.gov, Brandon shared some facts that really hit home, like the fact that bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time when someone is brave enough to intervene.
“Just because you're not the one getting bullied, it doesn't mean it's not your problem, too,” he said before urging fans: "Say something. Anything."
Brandon mentioned his own character on 13 Reasons Why, Justin, who didn't believe that Hannah being bullied was his problem - "until it was."
But he says you don't have to stop a whole basketball game like his character did: "You can just say 'stop' or 'don't talk to people like that'."
So the next time you see bullying happen and wonder if you should intervene, Brandon is certain: "you should."
