Britney Spears has filed for divorce from hubby Kevin Federline citing "irreconcilable differences".

The news comes just a day after the pop princess appeared on the David Letterman show in the US sporting a sassy, blonde bob, new slimline figure and looking happier than ever.

She reportedly filed her papers just before her appearance on the show but didn't mention this to the host.

Just two months ago 24-year-old Brit gave birth to the pair's second child, Jayden James, but rumours of a split have been circulating for almost a year, with K-Fed allegedly getting Brit's back up by smoking funny ciggies, flirting with the ladies and enjoying nights out on the town with the lads instead of staying at home being a responsible dad.

Now the singer wants full custody of Jayden James and the pair's first tot, 1-year-old Sean Preston.

Some say the final straw came at the launch of wannabe rapper K-Fed's appropriately named album, ''Playing With Fire' where the couple reportedly had a huge row.

Days later Fed is said to have stood Britney up on a dinner date and then his missus reportedly returned the favour by snubbing the launch of his tour at a New York club.
