Hip hop star Busta Rhymes has been arrested on assault charges after reportedly attacking a man who spat on his car.

The rapper was taken into custody with two members of his entourage after New Yorks Heineken Amsterjam Festival on Sunday (August 20).

Police say the incident in question occurred on August 12 and Rhymes has been charged with third-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The star, whose real name is Trevor Smith Jr, was released on bail and is due back in court on October 24.

Police have wanted to interview the rapper since the February shooting death of one of his bodyguards, Israel Ramirez.

Ramirez was killed outside a Brooklyn studio where Rhymes was recording a music video.
