Caitlyn Jenner Steals The Show At ESPY Awards With Emotional Speech
Former Olympian was supported by the Kardashian-Jenner clan as she accepted her Courage Award at the ceremony...
The occasion marked Jenner’s first major public appearance since announcing her transition to a woman during an interview with Diane Sawyer in April.
Wearing a custom-made Atelier Versace white gown, Cait gave her speech on behalf of trans youth, while also thanking her family when accepting the accolade.
After watching a montage of her sporting achievements as Bruce, Caitlyn said: “Wow — I have to talk after that? Thank you so much. It is so wonderful to be here tonight.
“Now the last few months have been a whirlwind of so many different experiences and emotions, but to tell you the truth, it seems like every time I turn around in life, I'm putting myself in these high-pressure situations: competing in the games, raising a family... but I've never felt more pressure than ever have felt in my life than over the last couple of months.”
She continued: “Picking out this outfit, OK girls, I get it: You've got to get the shoes, the hair, the makeup. The whole process, it's exhausting — and next, the Fashion Police! Please be kind on me, I'm new at this!"
Her speech then took a more serious turn, with the 65-year old stating: “All across this country right now, all across the world, at this very moment, there are young people coming to terms with being transgender.
“They're learning that they're different and they're trying to figure out how to handle that on top of every other problem that a teenager has. They're getting bullied. They've getting beaten up. They're getting murdered. And they're committing suicide."
She went on to namecheck the likes of Chaz Bono and Laverne Cox for paving the way for other transgender individuals, before concluding: “Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect.
“And from that respect, comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”
The former Olympian was joined by her stepchildren Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian at the event, while Kendall, Kylie, Brody, Casey, Burt and Brandon Jenner also showed their support.
