Why when you stir a mug of hot milk does it sounds hollow when your spoon taps against the edge of the mug?
VARIABLES:
Cold milk does not do this
Warm Soya milk and milk heated with chocolate does do this (I checked at work)
I can't find out so I'm thinking maybe one of you people can.

It is tender :)
I'm afraid it's quite boring

hard boiled doesn't mean concrete hard though. the bashing machine has to be very tender with its bashing.
i was hoping they chemically dissolved the shell or something :D

Nah, it's how I shell boiled eggs, the rolling's just like being bashed with a spoon lots of time.
Also drinks with milk in tend to be a lot thicker, try experimenting with gelatine and water.

It's hard boiled already :)

Kaz's theory has legs. But we need PROOF.
SK it doesn't happen with all hot drinks, only milk based ones (including Horlicks)
The eggs are boiled then rolled on their sides to partially break the shells then bashed out whole.

I find with the mugs we have at uni (asda's finest) that the same happens with hot chocolate. But also coffee.
I always figured it was because of the consistency of the chocolate milk. Much thicker than the average cup of tea. Perhaps because the tea is thinner it makes a less hollow sound, whereas the chocolate mix is thicker so the lovely 'pring' sound of the tea is lost and muffled.

It's because of the heat. Try it with any hot drink.

how are they shelled?

Because these things DO matter!
It was like the time when I got 2 separate offices trying to find out how hard boiled eggs were shelled industrially. I even rang M&S and Tesco but they weren't allowed to tell me in case a rival COPIED THEIR SYSTEM.
Eventually a Financial Director found out for me.
