Liverpool Carling Academy - 29.04.08
From about half past 6 a big queue had started to form with everyone singing Fratellis songs (mainly Chelsea Dagger) there was a fantastic buzz in the air and everyone was really keen to sign up to the MTV mailing list in exchange for a cool poster!
First band to play to a crowd of about a hundred people (and growing) was Alphabeat.
Alphabeat came on stage without an introduction or a word to the crowd; instead they let their insanely catchy tunes do the talking and blasted straight into a set with their Abba-esque brand of pop.
The crowd were a bit dubious as to how to react to Alphabeat due to only hearing one song the single Fascination.
Alphabeat played with passion and other than a technical problem with the bass there were no faults with the band, they sang and played perfectly and had the crown moving and jumping although a few annoying people in the crown ended up throwing ice at Anders the male lead singer.
But with pure professionalism the band carried on through the hecklers! Alphabeat played a perfect set in my eyes and were by far the best band of the night.
The Ting Tings again played a great set, for me second best band of the night they were clearly loving the Liverpool crowd which was now so crammed you couldn’t move.
The atmosphere was incredible and not knowing much about the Ting Tings I was pleasantly surprised.
They were very energetic on stage, funky and a great repertoire of songs I was very surprised. Lead singer Katie White kept the crowd’s attention running around the stage getting every one moving but again most people were waiting for the one song That’s Not My Name.
Along with Alphabeat, the Ting Tings now have many new fans. Now time for the part of the night everyone had been waiting for: The Fratellis.
The lights go off the crowd erupts for the Fratellis (who were 10 minutes late) For me the Fratellis seemed to lack the enthusiasm of the other bands not moving about much on stage not putting their all into the songs it seemed very rigid and some songs were not as fun sounding as they do on the album.
In my eyes the Fratellis are not a good live band, but in the eyes of their diehard fans though they could do no wrong and they got a marvellous reception with very energetic dancing and singing from all the fans! A whole bunch of new songs didn’t seem to bother the crowd much either, and they were rewarded with a cracking encore which included, of course, Chelsea Dagger.
All in all a good night had by many hundreds of people at the MTV Spanking New Tour, best band of the night in my eyes were Alphabeat without a doubt fun loving an carefree music a real treat to see live and will happily go see them again.
