The Metros | Live Review

They have a crap website but who cares - they're great live...

Cardiff Barfly - 12/03/08

A token amount of research ahead of tonight’s gig uncovered the following nugget of information about The Metros.

They have the worst official website ever.

Sure, there were some shocking sites back in the Nineties when many people still hadn’t figured out how to use the internet yet but The Metros’ site is just awful.

It’s ugly, impractical and basically unworkable. Tiny, black and red writing overlaps all over the page which would be hard enough to read even if it wasn’t backed by a black and white photo that makes the whole lot illegible.

Of course, only a fool would judge a band by their official website and it’s a pleasure to report that their gigs by contrast are great.

When it comes to getting a crowd up and dancing they’re a model of cool efficiency. Except that words like, ‘efficiency’ sound a bit cold and clinical which couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Metros are all about fun. The lead singer wears white stripes on his cheeks, which combined with jeans and a t-shirt make him look like Adam Ant on casual Friday.

But the band sound nothing like The Ants. Tight, brash and funky The Metros sound like The Libertines channelling the party spirit of Madness or The Specials.

It’s not the biggest crowd the Barfly has ever seen but those who are here are caught up in the party vibe, dancing and jumping about with abandon.

After the show The Metro’s amiable bassist Charlie is in a celebratory mood and clearly pleased at the crowd’s reaction,

“Considering it’s our first time in Cardiff it was really good,” he said, “The tours going well. We’re all really, really tired but we’re enjoying ourselves.”

It’s great when a band love what they do but, more importantly, on tonight’s form you’ll love what they do too.
