Dear We Are Scientists,
On behalf of the people of Newcastle, I would like to apologise for the lukewarm reception you received when you recently graced our humble shores.
Your description of us as 'studious' was a very generous one: from this observer's standpoint, it seemed more like we just couldn't be arsed. And that is unforgivable. After all, you gave us everything you had. your blood, your sweat and your delightful comedic banter.
Every song was assaulted with riotous aggression: new tracks 'Impatience', 'Tonight' and the colossal 'Dinosaurs' gained a whole new lease of life, sounding bolder and brasher than their 'Brain Thrust Mastery' counterparts. The 'With Love and Squalor' material glistened with a polished, yet raw, energy, acquired by a few years' live growth. 'Cash Cow' was the hedonistic punk behemoth it was always meant to be; 'Textbook' transformed into a beautiful cascade of emotion and as for 'Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt', well. it's hard to believe that a few short years ago, it had no place in our lives.
A recipe for success then. and how did we respond? With mouths tightly shut, arms firmly folded and feet well and truly on the ground. Only during anthemic closer 'The Great Escape' did a wave of excitement ripple through the apathetic masses, but by then it was far too little, far too late.
There is no excuse for this sort of disrespectful behaviour. I am truly sorry. Please don't let our bad manners on this occasion force you into writing Newcastle off for good. We're not that bad. Honest.
Yours lamentably,
Paul Bowden
