The Wombats Interview

the wombats, interview

The three piece came in for a quick chat about their hectic six months and ripping off Cliff Richard…

Hi guys, firstly how did you meet, and when did you form?

Dan Haggis (Drums) We got together about four and a half years ago and me and Murph, was studying at the same place in Liverpool. We did a few silly songs in various pubs, clubs and bars in Liverpool. One such song was about playing with a goat.

And then we met Tord (Øverland-Knudsen, Bassist) fresh came over from Norway and suddenly we were touring the world on a helicopter powered solely by soya beans.

You went to Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts which was founded by Paul McCartney. Did you get to meet him?

Matt Murphy (Vocals/ guitar/Keys): We met him a couple of times and he’s a nice guy. We just had a bit of a chat really he didn’t really give us any advice. I think any current, modern day band is influenced by The Beatles in some form. They weren’t a bad band basically where they?
Dan: No they definitely had a few tunes!

What’s the past year or six months it been like with the release of the two massive singles and the new album?

Murph’: Yeah it’s been great just a bit exhausting though. Everything has been kicking off.
Dan: We are still doing the same thing as we where doing years ago, its just more and more people are singing along and they’re even getting the wombat karaoke nights going.
Tord: It’s a bit surreal going from playing in front of 50 people in Liverpool to playing in front of 200 people in London.

Have you recorded the video for your new single Back Fire At The Disco yet?

Dan: Yeah, it’s the Cliff Richard rip off. It features Murph in leathers and roller-skates. And me and Tord in brightly coloured lycra and roller skates as well.
Murph: We are very close friends with the people who directed it and they showed us the Cliff Richard video.
Tord It was voted as one of the worst videos ever!

Backfire At The Disco is released later this month
