Medical science answers one of the big questions in pop, and the results are here…
Psychologist Dr Harry Witchel, working with Nokia, conducted experiments to analyse the effect music has on our emotions. Sad tunes lower the heart rate, happy songs rekindle good memories and encourage sighing, while exhilarating tracks make subjects breathe heavier, he found.
Dr Witchel then took his results and set to answering the three most fundamental questions in pop – what are, officially, the saddest, happiest and most exhilarating songs of all time!
He weaved his magic and the results can now be published…
'The Drugs Don’t Work' by The Verve was the saddest song ever, just above 'Angels' at number two and Elton John's 'Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word,' which took number three the tearjerker top ten.
But if you're looking for a more upbeat Christmas this year, the research says the top three feel good songs are 'Shiny Happy People' by REM, 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA and, top of the happy hit parade is Lily Allen's 'LDN'.
And if you wanna get excited then crank up the beat box and slap on some Killers, 'Somebody Told Me' which hit number three in the thrill chart, while Girls Aloud's 'Love Machine' was at number two and Blur's 'Song 3' was proven to be the most exhilarating track of all time.
So there's an end to one great pub debate – science has spoken!
