The X-Factor winner has been on the publicity trail in the US since Cowell negotiated a £5 million contract for her with US music mogul Clive Davis, who discovered Whitney Houston.

Reports in The Sun today claimed that the singer was due to undergo emergency throat surgery after suffering from severe tonsillitis.

However, this has been denied by a spokesperson for the star who stated: "She has got a pretty bad throat. She just can't shake it off at the moment but I don't think she needs to have an op."

The singer has become the third British woman ever to reach number one in the US with her debut single.
