MTV Review: 22 Jump Street
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill "do the same thing as last time" - this time with dorm rooms...
UK Release Date: June 6.
Running Time: 112 Minutes.
Director: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller.
Plot: After bumbling through high school (again) Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt are unleashed at a local college (it’s UNIVERSITY but whatever) to go deep undercover where a new drug is sweeping the student body and on the brink of being dealt nationwide (again).
Back under the watchful eye of the short-fused Capt. Dickson (Cube), the duo moves into the dorms. Jenko pursues a career on the football team while Schmidt delves into the bohemian art scene on campus and soon the pair are questioning their partnership.
Best Scene: Without ruining the surprise, when the cogs in Jenko’s brain finally click into place as he realises who Schmidt’s gotten lucky with on campus the glee is infectious. We’ve not creased our pants like that since Alan got tased in the face in The Hangover!
Best One Liner: Maya’s roommate Mercedes comes out with some corkers - too good spoil for you here - but we did LOL our socks off at Jenko’s ‘carte blanche’ gaffe: “I thought we had Cate Blanchett with the budget?!”
Date Movie Or Mate Movie? Dude, this is a movie to go see with your bro, bro.
Scene Stealer: Ice Cube’s entire face.
WTF Moment: Naturally, the pair ends up sampling the goods and boy do they trip balls.
Summary: “If it aint broke, don’t fix it”, so the ungrammatical proverb creators among us say and, hey, if The Hangover can do it why not this franchise? Making frequent, blatant references to the fact they’re doing the same thing as last time - hell, the movie opens with “previously on 21 Jump Street”! – this film, like the first is LOLs a minute.
Jonah Hill is at his SuperBaddest and Channing Tatum plays the pretty-but-slow muscle man effortlessly, and better still, this time round there’s LOTS more Ice Cube.
Oh, and as elaborate credit sequences go, this one is up there with the greats!
