Charlotte Church Apologises To The Queen
She regrets saying Her Majesty was a confused old woman…
Charlotte Churchhas said she is “deeply sorry” for comments she made about Queen Elizabeth.
In an interview with Esquire magazine, Charlotte said the 84-year-old monarch “has no idea what is going on” and said she had met the Queen on countless occasions but that she never seemed to remember the singer.
“I've met her about seven times and she never remembers me. When you get close to her you realise she's an old woman and has no idea what's going on,” Charlotte said. “I feel really sorry for her. She probably doesn't want to be wheeled out at every Royal Variety Performance to watch scantily clad dancers and s****y comedians.”
After the remarks were made public, Church was criticised by politicians and other public figures, some of whom suggested her comments were just a publicity stunt. “She has a career to revive as a TV personality, someone who appears on chat programmes. Perhaps the more extreme her view, the better for her career,” MP Jonathan Evans said.
Now the Back To Scratch singer has released a statement apologising for her remarks: “I am deeply sorry if my comments about Her Majesty the Queen caused offence. I am honoured to have met her and have an enormous amount of respect for her and what she does.
“After seeing those words in print, I realised how foolish I was to make such flippant remarks to a journalist. I find it difficult to remember even making them. My only defence is that I never expected a respected publication to sensationalise my words out of context like this.”
