Chuckie: 'Call Me Commander'
EXCLUSIVE! Dirty Dutch founder talks being 'knighted', Slash and Kelly Rowland…
Within hours of MTV News UK flying out to Ibiza we've already come face-to-face with a real life 'knight' - Dirty Dutch founder DJ Chuckie!
"The other week I went to Suriname for a Carifesta show and I got knighted by the President," he told us. "I'm officially a Commander In The Order of the Yellow Star which basically means they kinda acknowledge the fact that, as I was born in Suriname, they kinda showed me some love for showing love to my country.
"I got the opportunity to show the President a little skills…so from now on they call me Commander Chuckie!"
This year the producer's Dirty Dutch imprint has scored a residency at superclub Pacha which Chuckie says is "amazing, 'cause first of all I came here as a resident DJ of other concepts and now I have my own concept here and it's been working out amazing.
"I had some amazing DJs like Slash to join him after surprising the crowds at the WMC in Miami…
"Me and Slash have been friends for many years now. I met his wife first and we always stayed friends and we always hung out everywhere we go you know and at a certain point, I think it was Thanksgiving, I was at his house and we decided to actually do something with music 'cause we never thought about it because we were friends in the first place.
"So we took the Winter Music Conference as an opportunity so we did our first debut on the Ultra Music Festival and it was quite a unique situation because you never see dance acts going together with rock acts like that and it happened and I think it was quite successful. A bit of a surprise for everybody and I really like the surprise element of it. When he came out everybody was like 'wow'!
After teaming up with a rocker, Chuckie also recently headed on a hip-hop tip with his hook up with Kelly Rowland and some of the stuff might end up being for her or for me so theres a bunch of different artists we work with some of them are more like dance-orientated some are more like hip-hop...and thats what i do you know so after the summer i'll be on it heavy heavy heavy.
We couldn't end the interview with out asking the Commander about the 2013 MTV EMAs which are being held in the Dutch capital Amsterdam...
"I think in general Amsterdam is a great hub to watch Europe so if you come from North America Amsterdam's like a cool place to stop first. I think that's the reason also why the Amsterdam Dance Event is very successful so its only right for MTV hosting the European Music Awards there."
