Craig David Explains His ‘Perfect Formula’
EXCLUSIVE | The Trust Me singer tells MTV News how it's back to basics as he heads to the U.S.
No one loves a returning hero like regional England. So MTV News made the trip to Southampton on the south coast to see Craig David play a sell out show in his hometown. Five hours before the gig and there were hundreds of fans " some who had flown in especially from Italy and Spain " queuing round the block. Once inside MTV News Rickie sat down with Craig in his dressing room and asked about his career past, present and future Looking back on the first album I had the perfect formula said Craig, of his multi-platinum, chart-topping debut album Born To Do It. I was something new. Off the back of the garage movement I dropped Fill me In, then the R&B crossover 7 Days, then a ballad " Walking Away. With hindsight I had it locked. At times Craigs image has taken a bashing in the media, but the 27-year-old stays cool when asked about the performance of his most recent album Trust Me: We can all make excuses why things dont do as well at certain times but Im now a believer that if you can make the best album of your ability at that time then thats what being an artist is all about. Although he has enjoyed success in the USA before, CD isnt expecting to pick up where he left off four years later: I dont expect people to be like, oh yeah because the first and second record made an impact were supposed to just embrace you, so I had to start from the grass-roots again. Those hardcore fans outside the Southampton Guildhall would have been pleased to hear that Craig know which side is bread is buttered: He added: To be honest the UK is more important to me as this is where Im from and what Im all about. As long as everything is set here in Europe then America is a bonus. Trust Me is out now
