Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixonhas announced she is engaged to long term girlfriend Christine Marinoni.

The couple announced their engagement at a rally for gay rights in New York City on Sunday evening.

In a previous interview Nixon said 'I think we would definitely [get married] if it became legal in New York,'

The couple will follow in the footsteps of US TV host Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and plan to have a high profile lesbian wedding in the fall.

Nixon- who plays redhead lawyer Miranda in Sex And The City -will join her fellow cast members Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis on the set of Sex And The City The Movie 2 later this year.
