Dapper Laughs 'Killed Off' After Rape Joke Outrage

Comedian Daniel O'Reilly Goes on Newsnight to announce character 'retirement'...

Controversial comic character Dapper Laughs has been killed off by his creator, on the same day that ITV announced that it would not be giving him a second series.

Daniel O'Reilly, the comedian behind the character, appeared on BBC Two's Newsnight last night following an outraged public reaction to a rape joke during one of his live gigs.

"It was great at the beginning, but it has completely ruined everything for me as a comedian," he told the show. "It's wrecked my life to a certain extent."

And he was quick to admit he'd been in the wrong and to distance himself from the character.

"I don't want to be an advocate for (rape)," he explained. "I'm going to communicate to my fans that I don't agree, this is why I'm here, I don't agree with that.

"I'm not going to do what maybe other comedians would do and stand behind it and say 'If you don't like it switch off'.

"I'm not going to say that."

Asked what the character would do next, he responded: "Dapper Laughs is gone."

The Mirror also reports that all 12 dates on a forthcoming UK tour of major venues have been pulled by the Academy Music Group.
