Becks 'Sacrificed Football To Be A Celebrity'

Fergie thinks Posh is to blame for putting brakes on hubby's career...

Victoria Beckham is to blame for stopping David Beckham becoming a Manchester United legend.

Speaking at the launch of his new autobiography in London, the famously plain-speaking football manager said Becks' romance with the Spice Girls star changed everything for the young star.

The 71-year-old said the advent of the "Posh and Becks" brand meant Beckham was more interested in being a celebrity than a top footballer.

He told reporters: "The big problem for me was he fell in love with Victoria — that changed everything.
"There was nothing I could do about that. He was a young man, he'd fallen in love. We just had to hope that he could do both things.
"She was a big star, a pop star, and maybe he lacked that focus on what we needed at United. I'm a football man — I'm only interested in what they do on the pitch.
And according to The Sun, he goes further in his book, revealing: "He loved the game; he was living the dream. Then he wanted to give it all up for a new career, a new lifestyle, for stardom.
"David was the only player I managed who chose to be famous, who made it his mission to be known outside the game."
Becks left Man U in 2003 after the manager kicked a boot at him in the dressing room.
The player moved to Real Madrid for a £25million fee - but, according to his old boss he sacrificed his career for the lure of Hollywood when he signed for LA Galaxy.
However, despite his forthright comments, Sir Alex denied he was being critical of Becks.
He said: "He's an icon and an inspiration to every kid in the world. He's kept his dignity really well, he's a fantastic role model.
Fergie's book - Alex Ferguson My Autobiography - is out on Thursday, published by Hodder and Stoughton.
