David Beckham Thanks Sir Alex Ferguson On Facebook

David Beckham has commented on the news that Sir Alex Ferguson is to retire as manager of Manchester United with a post on his official Facebook page.

 

The 38-year-old, who played under Fergie for 10 years at Old Trafford, calls the Scotsman the 'greatest and best manager' he has ever played for, saying:

  

"I've just seen the news on Sir Alex. As I have said many times before the boss wasn't just the greatest and best manager I ever played under he was also a father figure to me from the moment I arrived at the club at the age of 11 until the day I left.

 

"Without him I would never have achieved what I have done in my career. He understood how important it was to play for your country and he knew how much it meant to me."

 

In his post, Beckham also thanked Sir Alex for his help during his ill fated World Cup in 1998, when he was sent off against Argentina and received much of the blame for England's failure to progress in the tournament:

 

"After '98 without the manager I would have found it virtually impossible to cope with the attention I was getting on and off the field and for this I will always be grateful to him for his support and protection."

 

While playing under Fergie in 2003, the two were embroiled in a dressing room clash after Man U lost 2-0 to rivals Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

 

Beckham had to receive stitches after the manager had thrown a football boot which struck the player just above the eye, but it looks as though all is forgiven as David signs off his message:

 

"I am truly honoured to have been guided by the greatest manager in football and to have had the career that I had under him.

 

"Thank you boss and enjoy the rest!"
