Despicable Me 2 Breaks 2013 UK Box Office Record

Gru and his minions outdo blockbusters on opening weekend...

Despicable Me 2 has broken the UK box office record for 2013 on its opening weekend.

The animated sequel - featuring the vocal talents of Steve Carell - tops the UK Box Office Chart after taking £14.8 million, including previews, a figure that beat the debuts of blockbuster movies Iron Man 3 and Man Of Steel.

According to Digital Spy, its success is in sharp contrast to that of the first movie, which took £3.66 million on its opening weekend in 2010.

As a result, both Superman reboot Man Of Steel and Brad Pitt zombie film World War Z dropped a place to No 2 and No 3 in the chart, while new releases This Is The End and Jason Statham's latest flick Hummingbird complete the top five.
