Everybody Wants Elsa To Have A Girlfriend In Frozen 2 And We’re So In

YES TO THIS

Over the weekend, one of our very own MTV writers from the US started something magical. 17-year-old Alexis Isabel launched a campaign to get Elsa a girlfriend for the upcoming sequel to ‘Frozen’, and basically everyone is on board.

It all started when Alexis tweeted, “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be” and followed up with, “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend” which has since been retweeted over 1.5 THOUSAND times, with the hashtag trending worldwide.

LGBT groups have always identified with Elsa and while there has never been any official confirmation on her sexuality, fan theories have speculated ever since the film’s release in 2013 that she might be a lesbian. The films themes are often interpreted in support of the LGBT community (as well being pro-feminist, pro-sisterly love and basically pro-awesome) with some even hailing the Oscar-winning ‘Let It Go’ as an LGBT anthem.

Director Jennifer Lee has never confirmed or denied these responses but instead rather brilliantly said, “We know what we made. But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world, so I don’t like to say anything, and let the fans talk. I think it’s up to them.”

The campaign is asking to actually see Elsa with a girlfriend in the forthcoming sequel to give young viewers (and, let’s face it, slightly older viewers) who identify as LGBT a character they can relate to so they feel comfortable with whatever their sexuality may be.

With the film scheduled for release in 2018, the script has probably already been written but we are SO behind this campaign. If anything it just shows that the big screen is ready for wider representation of the LBGT community. Even it doesn’t happen, because this is Disney and because this is the internet, some fans have already mocked up what it might look like and it’s pretty much the best thing ever.

YAY THIS.
