Dizzee Rascal Suicide Song
The rapper teams up with C.A.L.M for anti-suicide record
Dizzee Rascal has released a new video single in support of anti-suicide charity C.A.L.M.
The track, Dean, is dedicated to an old school friend of Dizzees, Dean Monroe, who took his own life.
Speaking to MTV, Dizzee explained how he agreed to donate the track after being shocked by the statistics, I didnt realise that suicide was the second biggest killer of young men after road accidents. Before gun crime, knife crime you know all the big things everyones talking about now, people are harming themselves more.
In a 10 year period from 1996 " 2006 13,718 men aged 15-35 killed themselves. This compares to 3,424 suicides in young women over the same period.
When asked why he thought the rate was so much higher for young men than for women, Dizzee explained as a man sometimes it feels like weakness to talk, that its more of a girl's thing. You know girls talk about their problems, guys try and hold it in to look stronger.
Finally, we asked Dizzee if he had any advice for young men who find themselves in such a desperate situation; Find someone to talk too. Youd be surprised who can relate, who will listen, know what I mean? Thats easier said than done, just try it at least.
