Drew Barrymorehas revealed her relationship with her mother is “so complicated.”
The 38 year-old actress admitted the two have had a fractured relationship ever since she was a child.
“I was 14 when I moved into my own apartment," recalled the star, who first appeared on screen in E.T. at the tender age of 4. “I was so scared. I didn't know anything. I didn't know you had to throw food out when it rotted in the fridge. I was convinced someone was going to crawl through my window.”
In recent years – and particularly since Drew had her first child, Olive – her relationship with her mother has marginally improved. “I've always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it,” she told Marie Claire.
“However, it hasn't enabled me to lessen the distance. It's the hardest subject in my life. I've never just been angry with her. I've always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can't really be in each other's lives at this point."
But Barrymore, who has starred in over 50 films during her career, has found a new family, with her husband Will Kopelman, and her circle of friends, which include Charlie’s Angels co-star Cameron Diaz.
She stated firmly: “I don't f*** anyone over. My friends are the loves of my life.”
