Ed Sheeran ‘Covers’ Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ – A Song Sheeran Actually Wrote

‘Love Yourself’ has now received a long-awaited cover by the artist that actually wrote the track - Ed Sheeran!

Back in 2015, ‘Love Yourself’ topped the charts in fifteen countries and was nominated for two GRAMMYs. But this track, one of the standouts from Justin Bieber’s fourth studio album, PURPOSE, isn’t 'really' his.

Ed Sheeran played a ‘cover’ of the track for KISS FM recently, introducing the performance by saying: “This is my cover, kind of, of Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’”.

Why the “kind of”? Because Ed Sheeran actually wrote ‘Love Yourself’.

One of the many songs Ed Sheeran has given away (others include Major Lazer’s ‘Cold Water’ and One Direction’s ‘Little Things’), ‘Love Yourself’ has now received a long-awaited cover by the artist that actually wrote the track. Check it out below.

Ed might’ve eventually given ‘Love Yourself’ to Bieber, but – fun fact - the ‘Shape Of You’ singer originally wrote the track with Rihanna in mind.

A key lyric in the song, "You should go and love yourself,"was originally, "You should go and f*ck yourself,"and Ed thought that Rihanna could get away with singing a lyric like that.

Speaking in a radio interview, Ed explained the story behind ‘Love Yourself’: “Rihanna could get away with saying ‘you should go and fuck yourself,’ in my mind anyway,” Sheeran said.

He went on to explain how he never got round to showing the track to Rihanna and gave it to Bieber instead.

“It kind of came at a zeitgeist time for his career, where he had fallen out of grace with the public, and he had this comeback song that was quite grown up,” Sheeran added.

In other Ed Sheeran news, the ‘Castle on the Hill’ singer recently revealed to MTV that a super fan made him his very own Ed Sheeran Monopoly board, featuring backpacks instead of houses, Wembley Stadium instead of Park Lane, and more.

Sheeran has also said that he wants to star in and soundtrack a British film that’s a mix between “Notting Hill and Once”. Read more.

Meanwhile, Ed said that he’s planning to put together his own boy band. Find out more here.

Also, because Sheeran is 'really good' at his job, he currently has nine tracks from his new album, ÷, in the Top Ten. Nine! Furthermore, if ÷ keeps up its current pace, it looks set to become the first ever artist to have his whole album featured in the UK Top 40 Singles Chart. Incredible.
