Ed Sheeran Talks Going Topless In ‘Shape Of You’ Video

"...it kind of happened very last minute."

Ed Sheeran has spoken about going topless in the Jason Koenig-directed, sumo-wrestling ‘Shape Of You’ video.

There’s a long, chequered history of Britain’s male pop stars getting their nips out for music videos. We had James Blunt in the little heard ‘You’re Beautiful’ visuals, and, of course, Ed Sheeran recently despatched his famous chequered shirts for ‘Shape Of You’.

But then there was also Robbie Williams in ‘Rock DJ’, where, in the uncensored version that wasn’t shown on MTV back in 2000, he not only threw away his clothes…he threw away his skin, too. (It’s not pretty.)

Speaking to US Weekly, Ed spoke about shedding his clothes for the new video. "My lifestyle changed. I realized I needed to start exercising, not necessarily to be slim but have a healthy heart. By exercising and not having such a wild lifestyle, you end up being a healthy human being," he said.

"Having my shirt off in the video wasn't my idea though. It was the director's and it kind of happened very last minute. I wasn't really comfortable with it but he lit it in such a way that it ended up looking quite cool."
