Ed Sheeran Tops 2014 Album Sales List
The X singer has beaten off tough competition from Coldplay and Sam Smith to bag the top spot...
Huge congratulations go to Ed Sheeran today. His album, X, has been named the biggest-selling record of the year, overtaking the mighty Coldplay.
The 23-year-old singer/songwriter's second album has sold over 634,000 and been certified double Platinum after spending eight weeks at the top of the chart. It was also named the year's fastest-selling album after shifting 182,000 copies in its first week.
Ed, who'll be performing at this year's MTV EMA, was chuffed to bits with the result.
"I'm so happy people have been enjoying my album so much," he said.
"Great to hear that it's still the biggest seller of the year and has now gone double Platinum too. Looking forward to playing it live to my UK fans when the tour starts next week!"
Nine of the top 10 biggest-selling albums came from Brit acts. Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour came in at number two and Coldplay's Ghost Stories takes third place, while Paolo Nutini's Caustic Love and Paloma Faith's A Perfect Contradiction make up the top five.
Pharrell Williams' album G.I.R.L is the only record by an international act to make the top 10.
