Victoria Beckham has reached out to her good friend Sir Elton John to offer her support in his public spat with Dolce & Gabbana.

The pop legend has joined a public boycott of the fashion label after controversial comments by its founders over same-sex families and children born from IVF treatment.

She tweeted Sir Elton to say: "Sending love to Elton David Zachary Elijah & all the beautiful IVF babies x vb."

Sir Elton had written: "Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana."

Meanwhile Stefano Gabbana has launched a counter-attack in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera.

He said: "I wasn't expecting it. I wasn't expecting it from someone like Elton John. I used to think - and I stress 'used to' - he was intelligent.

"What's going on? You preach understanding. You preach tolerance. And then you put the knife in? All because someone else doesn't see things your way? Is that supposed to be a democratic way of thinking?"

Gabbana also insisted that the outrage would not harm his brand.

"We might lose one or two Elton John fans, or gain one or two mums. Who knows?"
