10 Times Emma Thompson Was The Woman We Want To Become
Does she ever put a foot wrong?
By Tamara Roper
After Emma Thompson started trending on Twitter this morning, thanks to a typically brilliant appearance on BBC Breakfast, it did nothing but remind us that there’s no woman in the world we want to be more.
She’s won Oscars and remained entirely down to earth, rocked high fashion but pulled mad faces on the red carpet, and stood up for various things she’s believed in with a non-preachy approach.
Is the struggle real this Monday? Take a little slice of Thompson for your inspiration today, with 10 times Emma has been the woman we aspire to be.
That time she pretended to be drunk at the Golden Globes
Perhaps the one and only time anyone’s ever likened Louboutins to blood.
That time she was in every Great British Film ever
‘Harry Potter’. ‘Nanny McPhee’. ‘An Education’. ‘Love Actually’. We could go on.
That time she bought land to c**k block Heathrow
In an attempt to stop Heathrow’s third runway being built, Emma and three others pitched in, and bought land half the size of a football pitch. It still hasn’t happened; so far, so good.
That time she threw herself into her work to get over a break-up and came out with an Oscar and a new husband
After reports of Kenneth Branagh (all round drama luvvie and Emma’s then-husband) having an affair, she battled depression and dedicated herself to ‘Sense And Sensibility’, a film she went on win the Best Actress Oscar for. Emma subsequently married her co-star Greg Wise. #Winning
That time she called out Exeter for racism
After her Rwandan son suffered at the hands of racists during his first year of university in Exeter, Emma called out the establishment for needing to work on their integration - proving that as well as an actor, spokeswoman and celebrity, she’s a caring mother too.
That time she drew on personal experience to play her role in ‘Love Actually’ - and smashed it
After her first husband, Kenneth Branagh, had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter, Emma drew on the experience to play Karen, long-suffering wife, mother and sister in ‘Love Actually’. Saying she’d “had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom”, she won the hearts of anyone who’s ever watched the film.
That time she was the only woman to win Oscars for both writing and acting

That time she adopted a former child soldier
Unable to have more children, Emma and her husband Greg Wise informally adopted Tindyebwa Agaba, a former Rwandan child soldier who lost his father to AIDs and mother and sister to the Rwandan genocide. He is now an official member of their family, and is a Human Rights worker.
That time she sacrificed her dignity to look like this:
That time she ended up in a selfie with Joey Essex and looked like she was loving it:
