Erykah Badu: “We Don’t Own Our Music No More…”
The soul singer talks about the death of 'real' hip-hop music…
American soul singer Erykah Baduhas recently shared some of her controversial thoughts about the route that hip-hop seems to be going down.
Badu feels like too many rappers are choosing to rhyme over pop/techno beats nowadays and it is as if hip-hop has been taken over by a sound which is not their own.
She told Underground Charizma: "How y'all gonna stand by and let our music turn into pop/techno/ cornball/a** music. We don't own our music no more. Come to think of it, did we EVER own it? When I say own our music, I'm not talking about the artist, I'm talking about the people, let me be quiet. I wanna hear from the young people?
“Easy for me to complain about this techno-pop because I have a taste for something else, but how do you feel? These rappers ought to be ashamed of them damn selves; I'm talking about the MCs rapping over this pop/techno music. I believe in pimpin’ the system but got D*MN! Not like this.”
