Often referred to as the Glastonbury of Europe, Sziget festival has secured itself as an event on everyone’s bucket list. Stretching over a whole week, with an unrivalled calibre of acts for 2019 including Florence + The Machine and Foo Fighters, we had to head over to Budapest to see what all the fuss was about. Read on for our top picks...
Twenty One Pilots
The final day of Sziget had a special vibe and this can be partly attributed to the dedication of twenty one pilots fans. The band were billed on the Main Stage at around 6pm, an early slot for an act that thrives in headline slots across the globe, but this didn’t stop the people of Sziget turning up to make one of the biggest crowds we saw over the whole festival. Speaking to other acts on the line-up like Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, they said their expectations for the opening slot on the Main Stage were blown out of the water as the twenty one pilot’s fans showed them so much love! The early slots usually don’t bring in a big crowd but all the die-hards getting their spot on the barrier elevated their set to new energy levels. The Ohio duo whizzed through a greatest-hits-style set performing tracks spanning across their five albums with highlights including ‘Ride’, their latest hit ‘The Hype’, and an epic House Of Pain ‘Jump Around’ cover. The duo left us praying that we see them at another festival ASAP!
Foo Fighters
Any festival with Foo Fighters as a headliner is definitely doing something right. They’ve secured spots on the biggest festivals across the world over their 25+ years on the scene, and their Sziget headline slot was definitely one to remember. Anyone who’s been to a Foo Fighters show knows that Dave Grohl and co. will keep playing until they get booted off stage, sometimes performing for more than THREE HOURS, yes, they have that many bangers! The fans in Budapest were treated to 22 of their greatest hits including ‘The Pretender’, ‘Monkey Wrench’ and ‘Everlong’ providing a mass sing-a-long for everyone involved.
Florence & The Machine
Florence + The Machine is no stranger to headlining a festival. We all remember the iconic moment she stepped in for Foo Fighters at Glastonbury 2015 and absolutely nailed it. At this year’s Sziget they were both on the line-up, back on top form, and ready to blow the people of Budapest away. Florence took to the Main Stage after a boiling 36-degree day on the festival site, and like a breath of fresh air she brought the sixth day to a close. Her ethereal stage presence always brings us so much joy as she performs songs both old and new including ‘High As Hope’, ‘The Hunger’ and of course, ‘Ship To Wreck’.
Tove Lo
Our queen Tove Lo performed at Sziget this year and, as always, blew us away with her fierce pop. With the release of her new album Sunshine Kitty coming very soon, we got to hear some of the track from this as well as her classic bangers as she dominated the main stage. We’d never miss a Tove Lo festival performance, she gave us energy to dance in the scorching Serbian heat!
Years & Years
We will always love Years & Years and as die-hard day ones we had to go and see them smash it on the main stage at Sziget festival this summer. Led by frontman extraordinaire, Olly Alexander, they took us to Palo Santo and back again with their hit filled set. We were treated to stunning performances of our faves ‘If You’re Over Me’, ‘Sanctify’ and loads more - as well as witnessing Olly’s epic dance moves throughout the whole set.
