Elbow have won the Mercury Prize with their latest LP The Seldom Seen Kid.

The Manc band picked up the award (and a cheque for 20,000) - which recognises the best album of the year- after 18 years together as a group.

They beat 12 other records from acts including Estelle, Adele, The Last Shadow Puppets and Radiohead.

Elbow were announced as winners at a ceremony in London where all the nominees attended " except secretive dubstep king Burial.

Collecting the award singer Guy Garvey said: "This is probably the best thing that has ever happened to us."

The Seldom Seen Kid is the five-pieces fourth album, their first Asleep In The back was also Mercury nominated.

Performing at the ceremony- attended by the great and the good of the music industry- were The Last Shadow Puppets who played the title track of their album and Estelle who played Pretty Please.
